Midnight in the Mountains
Fimmvörðuháls, S-Iceland
This is summer solstice hiking over the 1050m high Fimmvörðuháls mountain pass in south Iceland. It connects the south coast to the beautiful and isolated Þórsmörk.
The mountains ahead are formed by numerous pre-historic volcanic eruptions in the area. One volcano is still active in the area, Mt. Katla. It is covered with thick ice cap and when it erupts huge flood waves of water from the melted ice comes crashing down this valley carving the soft rock mountains with deep canyons.
